Preparing Heavy Equipment for Storage

Machinery Storage in Equip Trucking Warehouse

When you store equipment, keeping it safe until spring — or until your next project — is crucial. Prepare your large equipment and find proper heavy machinery storage to ensure that your engines will be ready when it’s time to start a new job.

Equip Trucking & Warehousing offers customizable storage solutions for heavy machinery in the tri-state area. Our team also has three generations of experience to share with equipment owners wondering how to prepare heavy equipment for storage.

How to Prepare Heavy Machinery for Storage

Storing your equipment is the best way to protect it from the elements and keep it in working order. However, it’s just as important to do maintenance on your machinery and prepare it for the time it’ll spend in our warehouse. When it’s time to use your machinery again, you’ll want it to function properly.

These are four of the best practices to care for your equipment’s vulnerable components and get back to work as soon as possible.

Refuel

If there’s condensation in your fuel tank, the water will contaminate your fuel lines and harm your engine. Instead, refuel your equipment before storing it to prevent water from damaging anything. Adding a fuel stabilizer can protect your machine even further.

You should siphon this gas out of your tank and refill it before using your engine again. Fresh gas maintains your air-fuel ratio and keeps residue from causing engine problems.

Perform Maintenance

Routine and preventive maintenance helps smooth the transition from storage to regular use. Tighten bolts, replace fluids and hydraulic hoses, lubricate parts and do any other routine tasks included in your manual.

Keep batteries charged and in a room-temperature environment if possible. This prevents them from freezing and leaking — or, in hot weather, from evaporation that damages the cells. If your equipment has tires, slightly over-inflate them before the colder seasons so decreasing tire pressure doesn’t cause them to go flat.

Clean and Repair

In addition to performing preventive maintenance, repair minor issues and remove debris from your equipment before sending it to storage. Over time, minor damage can degrade into larger issues with costly fixes and keep you from making progress on new projects. By remedying problems as soon as they arise, you save yourself future time and expenses.

Likewise, you can prevent blockages and other issues by cleaning your machinery before storing it for long periods.

Repaint

If you find chipped paint on your equipment, repaint it before leaving it in the warehouse. Unsealed metal oxidizes when you leave it exposed. This makes your machinery look older, but corrosion also has more serious consequences.

Using rusted equipment makes your job sites dangerous. Add an extra coat of paint to prevent wear and future accidents and keep your employees safe.

Proper Heavy Equipment Storage Options Available From Equip Trucking

Building and maintaining proper heavy machinery storage is expensive. To store your own equipment, you’d need to buy or lease land, build a structure and be responsible for the costs of repairing, heating and providing security for it. Our third-party storage solutions are more affordable, use less of your resources and have turnkey solutions for our customers.

At Equip Trucking & Warehousing, we offer off-site warehousing services for a variety of industries. We serve clients who store machinery seasonally, while they relocate or even as they distribute equipment. Our secure property has multiple storage solutions, including 20 acres of outdoor storage and a 200,000-square-foot indoor warehouse. The warehouse is heated, and its 75-foot ceilings make it a versatile space for all of your heavy equipment.
